Student resume example with no professional experience
Fact-checked against the cited sources · Updated October 4, 2026
A student resume does not need to begin with an apology for limited experience. Put the most relevant evidence first: education, projects, internships, volunteering, campus leadership, part-time work, or practical training. Describe what you did, how you did it, and what you produced or learned. The sample below is fictional and shows structure only; replace every name, date, course, tool, responsibility, and result with your own accurate information.
First-job resume: before, evidence, after
Start with facts you can explain in an interview, not impressive adjectives. Each worked example below shows what changed and why. All source notes and rewrites are fictional teaching examples, not customer results. Adapt the method, not someone else's claims.
A course project is experience, not employment
Before: vague or unsupported
Worked on a group project and developed communication skills.
Fictional source notes
An academic group compared campus travel survey responses. The student checked spreadsheet category labels and wrote the methods slide. No employer or external client took part.
After: supported by those notes
Checked category labels in the spreadsheet for a university travel-survey project and wrote the methods slide explaining how the team compared responses.
Why this is better
Names a personal contribution, method and deliverable. Keep it under Academic Projects; do not invent a client, job title or business result.
Replace a leadership adjective with a task
Before: vague or unsupported
Excellent leader with strong organisational skills.
Fictional source notes
The student helped organise society meetings, confirmed room bookings and wrote a task list so another volunteer could cover an absence. They did not lead the whole society.
After: supported by those notes
Confirmed meeting-room bookings for a student society and prepared task handovers so another volunteer could cover the event setup.
Why this is better
Shows organisation through observable work without upgrading a contributor into a society president. Include the actual role and dates.
Describe unpaid work without disguising it
Before: vague or unsupported
Helped at a charity and improved efficiency by 40%.
Fictional source notes
During a volunteer shift, the student sorted donated items and recorded categories on the coordinator's checklist. No before/after timing or efficiency measurement exists.
After: supported by those notes
Sorted donated items by category during volunteer shifts and updated the coordinator's checklist to support collection planning.
Why this is better
Removes an unsupported percentage while keeping a useful action and purpose. Label this Volunteer Experience, not paid employment.
Use your own evidence next
Write down the setting, your task, the method and the output. Leave a metric blank when you cannot verify it. The blank worksheet is free, works in a text editor and does not upload or submit your answers.

Choose your section order
| Your strongest evidence | Recommended order after contact details | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Degree, relevant coursework, and academic projects | Education → Projects → Experience → Skills | The most relevant proof appears before unrelated part-time work. |
| Internship or apprenticeship | Summary → Experience → Education → Skills | Direct workplace evidence deserves early attention. |
| Transferable part-time work | Summary → Experience → Education/Projects → Skills | Customer service, reliability, teamwork, and operations can support many entry roles. |
| Volunteering, society leadership, or sport | Education → Leadership/Activities → Projects/Experience → Skills | Ownership and collaboration become visible without pretending they were paid employment. |
| No relevant evidence yet | Education → one new relevant project → any work/volunteering → Skills | Create a truthful work sample before filling the resume with unsupported adjectives. |

What counts as experience?
Experience is broader than full-time employment. A recruiter still needs to understand the setting and your role, so label each item honestly. Do not call a course assignment a client project unless a client genuinely participated, and do not turn membership into leadership.
| Evidence source | Useful details | Honest section label |
|---|---|---|
| Course project | Question, method, tools, deliverable, teamwork, and limitations. | Academic Projects or Selected Projects |
| Internship | Team, responsibilities, supervision, tools, output, and verified result. | Experience or Internships |
| Part-time work | Customers, operations, reliability, systems, problem solving, and progression. | Experience |
| Volunteering | Beneficiary, role, commitment, action, and useful output. | Volunteer Experience |
| Student society | Office held, decisions, events, budget responsibility, or communication. | Leadership and Activities |
| Personal portfolio | Problem chosen, process, code or artefact, testing, reflection, and link. | Projects or Portfolio |
Write stronger student resume bullets
Begin with a specific action, add the context or method, and finish with the output or purpose. Use a number only when it is real, useful, and you can explain where it came from. A concrete non-numerical outcome is better than a fabricated statistic.
Too vague
“Worked on a group project and improved teamwork skills.”
Specific
“Created the team’s data dictionary, checked category labels before analysis, and presented the project’s limitations in the final briefing.”
Unsupported claim
“Excellent leader with outstanding communication skills.”
Evidence
“Coordinated speaker, room, promotion, and accessibility tasks for Data Society events and prepared written handovers for volunteers.”
How to write each section
Contact details
Include your name, city or region, a professional email, phone, and a useful LinkedIn or portfolio link. You normally do not need a full street address. Check local expectations before adding a photograph, date of birth, nationality, or other sensitive details.
Profile or objective
A short profile can identify your study area, strongest relevant evidence, tools, and target role. Avoid leading with what you lack. The resume summary examples show how a student version differs from an experienced-candidate summary. Skip the profile if it only repeats the section headings below it.
Education
List the current or most recent programme, institution, and expected or completed date. Add selected modules, a thesis, honours, projects, or recognised credentials only when relevant. CareerOneStop advises that new graduates can place Education before Work Experience, while experienced applicants normally move it lower. Do not imply that an unfinished programme is complete.
Projects and experience
Give each project a name and context. Describe your contribution rather than only the team result. For employment, include role, employer, dates, and relevant bullets. A retail, hospitality, care, delivery, or campus job can demonstrate reliability, service, safety, systems, or teamwork even when it is not in your target industry.
Skills
List job-relevant tools, methods, languages, licences, and practical skills you can demonstrate. Calibrate language levels honestly. Avoid generic soft-skill lists; show communication, organisation, and teamwork through projects and experience. Research role-specific terminology through the relevant page in the resume examples hub and through official occupational information such as O*NET OnLine.
Student resume mistakes to avoid
- Using a generic objective that only says you want to gain experience.
- Leaving relevant projects out because they were unpaid or completed in class.
- Calling tools “advanced” when you have only followed an introductory tutorial.
- Copying achievements or numbers from an online example.
- Listing every course, club, hobby, and school award without a connection to the role.
- Hiding dates or an honest work history in a purely skills-based format.
- Using several columns, icons, or graphics for essential content when applying through an ATS.
- Submitting the same untargeted resume for unrelated roles.
Final student resume checklist
- The target role is clear and the strongest relevant evidence appears early.
- Expected graduation and incomplete qualifications are labelled accurately.
- Projects explain context, personal contribution, tools, and output.
- Part-time work highlights relevant responsibilities without exaggeration.
- Skills can be demonstrated in an interview or work sample.
- Dates, spelling, links, and contact details are checked.
- The layout follows the ATS-friendly resume checklist.
- The file type follows the employer’s instructions.

FAQ
What should a student put on a resume with no experience?
Use relevant education, academic or personal projects, volunteering, campus leadership, practical training, and transferable evidence from part-time work.
Should education come before experience on a student resume?
Place Education first when recent study and projects are your strongest match. Put a relevant internship or substantial work experience first when it provides stronger evidence.
Can I include coursework and class projects?
Yes, when they are relevant. Name the question, methods, tools, your contribution, and deliverable, and label the work honestly as academic.
How long should a student resume be?
Keep it concise enough that every item supports the target application. One page is often sufficient for an early-career applicant, but employer and country instructions take priority.
